Inert noble gas. Famous for the orange-red glow it emits in electrical discharge tubes. Neon (Ne) is a Noble Gas with atomic number 10, located in period 2, group 18. As a noble gas it has a full outer shell, is extremely unreactive, and exists as a monatomic gas at room temperature.
With 8 electrons in its outermost shell, Neon bonds accordingly; full configuration [He] 2s² 2p⁶. At room temperature it is normally a gas (a very low melting point); it melts near 24.56 K (-248.6 °C), boils near 27.07 K (-246.1 °C), has a density around 0.0008999 g/cm³.
